Rakeback Bankroll Management Tips

If you’ve taken the plunge and decided to get a rakeback account for playing online poker I’m sure you’ll be reaping the rewards soon. Before you can benefit from anything though, I need to teach you a couple things about bankroll management that relate directly with rakeback. All too often I see poker players who just got their rakeback account waste their money that they earned. If you earn $100 in rakeback your first month there is absolutely no point wasting the money playing in games that you wouldn’t otherwise play.

For instance, if you generally play in sit and go tournaments then you should stick with those when you get your rakeback money. I’ve seen a lot of tournament players waste all of their rakeback money in one hand trying to double up playing a cash game. When you start trying to do things out of your comfort zone when you’re playing poker, it can often lead to more trouble then good. If you generally play in $10 tournaments and you just received $50-$100 in rakeback for the month don’t play in one big tournament either. I’ve seen a lot of people do this as well and if they don’t win any money in the tournament they’re often pretty upset.

The reason why players seem to waste their rakeback is simple. A lot of people think that the rakeback they’re receiving is free money and that they can try and get lucky with it. So instead of playing $10 tournaments like someone normally might do this player will play in a big $100 tournament with his rakeback. The player is often going to lose his entire $100 doing this because the competition at the $100 game is going to be much more difficult then he is use too. You need to think of your rakeback money as your own money that you had to work for. In a way you do need to work for the rakeback money you earn because you need to play poker in order to earn it.

A lot of players will actually withdraw all of their rakeback earnings so that they don’t use it towards their bankroll. This is a great idea for players as it prevents you from playing poker with the money at all. If you happen to have lost your bankroll one month you’ll be able to help get some of it back with your rakeback. Make sure you don’t use the rakeback money on months where you’ve lost your bankroll though. The reason you shouldn’t is simply because you don’t want to tilt off your money.

Managing your bankroll is all about being a poker player. If you expect to make it far playing poker then you’re going to need to learn how to manage your bankroll from the beginning. It takes patience, perseverance, skill and a bit of luck in order to build up your bankroll, but once you do you’ll be glad you did. Many players spend years depositing money into their accounts simply to lose it all every time because they don’t manage their roll at all.
